Abstract

Border areas are generally less accessible, which makes it difficult to provide basic services. The region faces major development challenges due to its remoteness and limited infrastructure. Sustainable border tourism is ideal for improving the well-being of rural border communities by providing additional income, lowering unemployment, and creating new and appealing jobs from traditional rural activities while preserving the traditional way of life. This study applies a descriptive-analytical approach to investigate sustainable border tourism along the Indo-Bangladesh border in the Jalpaiguri district. All data were collected using purposive sampling survey through direct observation, schedule, interview and PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal) methods. A total of 100 households and 30 knowledgeable persons were interviewed. An analysis of strengths, Weaknesses, opportunities and Threats (SWOT) of this region as a potential area for sustainable border tourism has also been attempted. According to the findings of the study, the most significant benefit of the Indo-Bangladesh Border area of Jalpaiguri District is the presence of numerous religious, historical, political, and cultural sites. However, despite having strong tourism potential, these regions are economically underdeveloped; as a result, tourism is not systematically developed in destinations along the Indo-Bangladesh border in the Jalpaiguri District. The region's remoteness and lack of infrastructure are significant impediments to its development.
