Politics of Cultural Nationalism and the Idea of the Hindu Nation

Abstract

The Constitution of India defines the country as a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. The principle of secularism is an essential part of the basic structure of our Constitution. However, in recent times, there has been much debate over the idea of recognizing India as a Hindu Rashtra (Hindu Nation). This discourse on the Hindu nation is a component of right-wing cultural nationalism in India. The word Hindu originates from the term Sindhu. In Sanskrit, Sindhu refers not only to the sea but also to the Indus River. The word Hindu itself is not of Indian origin. During the early medieval period, people from West and Central Asia began referring to the inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent—particularly those living on the eastern banks of the Indus River—as Hindus. Thus, the term Hindu was not used in India before the arrival of the Turks. Over time, especially during the 19th century, various social and religious reformers redefined the term in a new and modern way. Today, it has become a key element of the ideology of cultural nationalism promoted by right-wing political groups in India. This research paper analyzes the different forms of cultural nationalism in India, with particular emphasis on the idea of the Hindu nation.

Abstract in Hindi Language: भारत का संविधान भारत को एक संप्रभु, समाजवादी, धर्मनिरपेक्ष, लोकतांत्रिक गणराज्य के रूप में परिभाषित करता है। धर्मनिरपेक्षता का सिद्धांत हमारे संविधान की मूल संरचना का हिस्सा है। लेकिन, आज भारत को एक हिंदू राष्ट्र के रूप में मानने के विचार पर बहुत चर्चा हो रही है। हिंदू राष्ट्र का यह विमर्श भारत में दक्षिणपंथी सांस्कृतिक राष्ट्रवाद का एक हिस्सा है। 'हिंदू' शब्द की व्युत्पत्ति 'सिंधु' शब्द से हुई है। संस्कृत में सिंधु का तात्पर्य समुद्र के साथ-साथ सिंधु नदी से भी है। 'हिंदू' शब्द भारतीय मूल का नहीं है। यह मध्यकाल के प्रारंभिक भाग में था जब पश्चिम और मध्य एशिया के लोग भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप के निवासियों को, विशेष रूप से जो सिंधु के पूर्वी तट पर रहते थे, उन्हें हिंदू कहना शुरू कर दिया। इसलिए, तुर्कों के भारत आने से पहले 'हिंदू' शब्द भारत में मौजूद नहीं था। समय बीतने के साथ, खासकर 19वीं शताब्दी के दौरान, विभिन्न सामाजिक और धार्मिक सुधारकों द्वारा इस शब्द को एक नए और आधुनिक तरीके से परिभाषित किया गया। आज, यह भारत में दक्षिणपंथी दलों द्वारा प्रचारित सांस्कृतिक राष्ट्रवाद की विचारधारा का हिस्सा बन गया है। इस शोध पत्र में, हम हिंदू राष्ट्र के विचार पर विशेष जोर देते हुए, भारत में सांस्कृतिक राष्ट्रवाद के विभिन्न रूपों का विश्लेषण करेंगे।
