Abstract

Urgent action is required to address climate change and its impacts to facilitate a successful energy transition. The SDGs aim to ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy by 2030. This study examines the interconnections between climate change, energy transition, and SDGs implementation, with a particular focus on Global North-South collaboration and its implications for Nepal. Using a systematic literature review and expert consultations. The study highlights Nepal’s energy challenges, including low per-capita electricity consumption and heavy reliance (70%) on traditional biomass fuels, which pose risks to public health and environmental sustainability. Glacial melt and extreme weather threaten Nepal’s energy security, despite hydropower’s potential for self-sufficiency. Disparities in climate policy commitments between the Global North and South remain a significant challenge; while the North, responsible for 92% of global greenhouse gas emissions, advocates for collective mitigation efforts, the South demands diverse and context-specific solutions. The study finds that energy transition plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change by reducing emissions, thereby advancing the SDGs. However, Nepal requires an estimated $47.5 billion in climate finance from the Global North. Achieving sustainable development requires global cooperation, effective climate financing, knowledge transfer, and a robust international framework underpinned by solidarity.

Author Biography

Rajendra Pandit (PhD), Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC)

Dr. Rajendra Pandit holds a Ph.D. in Development Studies from the Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU), Nepal. He earned a Master’s degree in International and Development Economics (MIDE) from the University of Applied Sciences (HTW), Berlin, Germany, and a Master’s in Business Studies (MBS) from Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal. Dr. Pandit currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at the Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC). Throughout his career, he has participated in several international conferences and seminars selected through competitive global and regional scholarship programs. Notably, he participated twice in international conferences on the MDGs and once on the SDGs held in Germany. The author was motivated to conduct research on this topic after participating in these international conferences, which deepened his interest in global development and sustainability issues. During his doctoral research, Dr. Pandit examined public investment in agricultural research as a strategic approach to alleviate poverty and hunger while enhancing food security through improved agricultural productivity. His work contributes to developing effective policies aimed to achieve the SDGs. Motivated by his academic and professional experiences, Dr. Pandit continues to pursue research focused on climate change, energy transition and sustainable development. His ongoing research seeks to generate insights that can guide policymakers in formulating evidence-based strategies. Through this publication, he also aims to further disseminate knowledge and contribute to scholarly dialogues in both national and international forums.
