Impact of Story Mapping Strategy on Comprehension Ability among School Going Children

A child’s emotional and intellectual development depends greatly on their ability to understand what they read. Strong reading skills help learners achieve long-term academic achievement. The story map technique is widely used in academic as a powerful method to enhance students’ comprehension and interpretative skills. Methodology: One group pre test post test design was adopted. The research was conducted among 50 students in Brotherhood Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Chennai. The population includes 6thstd children in 2 sections. Convenience sampling technique was used for the study. Intervention: Self structured questionnaire on moral story - Importance of values and good habits -characters, plots, solution, moral, summary was used for data collection. Results: In pretest, majority of the school going children 31(62%) had moderate comprehensive skill, 10 (20%) had adequate comprehensive skill and 9(18%) had inadequate comprehensive skill; in post test, 46(92%) had adequate comprehensive skill and 4(8%) had moderate comprehensive skill. There was significant association with the demographic variable - did you read any books other than subject books had shown statistically significant association. Conclusion: Pediatric Nurses play a key role in identifying comprehension difficulties earlier and guide in interventions to enhance children learning skills and development.
