Women’s Empowerment and Home-Based Entrepreneurship: Opportunities and Challenges Towards Economic Self-Reliance

महिला सशक्तिकरण एवं गृह-आधारित उद्यमिता: आर्थिक आत्मनिर्भरता की दिशा में संभावनाएँ और चुनौतियाँ

Abstract

In a developing country like India, women’s empowerment is considered an essential prerequisite for economic development. For women who have traditionally been confined to the boundaries of the household within the conventional social structure, home-based entrepreneurship has emerged as a means of establishing a balance between family responsibilities and economic participation. Women are increasingly becoming self-reliant through self-employment in various fields such as tailoring and embroidery, pickle and papad production, handicrafts, food processing, beauty services, tuition, and social media-based businesses. The present research paper is based on secondary sources and analyses the concept of home-based entrepreneurship, its socio-economic significance, the role of government schemes, and the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs. The study finds that over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in indicators such as the female labour force participation rate, women-led startups, and financial inclusion. However, challenges such as access to credit, digital literacy, market access, and social attitudes continue to persist. The study concludes by presenting practical suggestions for further strengthening home-based women’s entrepreneurship.

Abstract in Hindi Language: भारत जैसे विकासशील देश में महिला सशक्तिकरण को आर्थिक विकास की एक अनिवार्य पूर्वशर्त माना जाता है। पारंपरिक सामाजिक ढाँचे में घर की चारदीवारी तक सीमित रही महिलाओं के लिए गृह-आधारित उद्यमिता एक ऐसा माध्यम बनकर उभरी है, जो पारिवारिक उत्तरदायित्वों और आर्थिक भागीदारी के बीच संतुलन स्थापित करती है। सिलाई-कढ़ाई, अचार-पापड़ निर्माण, हस्तशिल्प, खाद्य प्रसंस्करण, सौंदर्य सेवाएँ, ट्यूशन तथा सोशल मीडिया आधारित व्यवसायों जैसे अनेक क्षेत्रों में महिलाएँ अब स्वरोजगार के माध्यम से आत्मनिर्भर बन रही हैं। प्रस्तुत शोध-पत्र द्वितीयक स्रोतों पर आधारित है और यह गृह-आधारित उद्यमिता की अवधारणा, इसके सामाजिक-आर्थिक महत्त्व, सरकारी योजनाओं की भूमिका तथा महिला उद्यमियों के समक्ष विद्यमान चुनौतियों का विश्लेषण करता है। अध्ययन में पाया गया कि पिछले एक दशक में महिला श्रम बल भागीदारी दर, महिला-नेतृत्व वाले स्टार्टअप तथा वित्तीय समावेशन के संकेतकों में उल्लेखनीय वृद्धि हुई है, तथापि ऋण उपलब्धता, डिजिटल साक्षरता, बाज़ार तक पहुँच और सामाजिक मानसिकता जैसी चुनौतियाँ अब भी बनी हुई हैं। अध्ययन के अंत में गृह-आधारित महिला उद्यमिता को अधिक सशक्त बनाने हेतु ठोस सुझाव प्रस्तुत किए गए हैं।
