A Comparative Study on selected Physical Fitness Components between State Level Kho-Kho Players and Professional Chhau Dancers

Abstract

Objectives: The main purpose of the study was to compare the selected Physical Fitness components (Agility, Flexibility and Muscular Endurance) between state level Kho-Kho players and professional Chhau Dancers. Methodology: To accomplish these study total 70 female subjects (35 Kho-Kho players & 35 Chhau Dancers) were randomly selected for this study. Kho-Kho players who participated in state level competition from different districts of West Bengal were selected for this study as subjects. Chhau Dancers were selected as subject from Purulia District and they were 5 years practitioner. The ages of the subjects were ranges between 18 to 25 years. Selected Physical Fitness component (Agility, Flexibility and Muscular Endurance) were the criterion measured for this study. All Selected criterion were measured through different standard test. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard divination) and independent t – test was used for data analysis and interpretation. Significant differences were considered at > 0.05 level of confidence. Results: Statistical calculation of the gathered data showed that there were no significant differences between State Level Kho-Kho Players and Professional Chhau Dancers in relation to Agility, Flexibility and Muscular Endurance   at 0.05 level of significance. Conclusions: It was concluded that in respect of Agility and Flexibility Chhau Dancers were better in compare to Kho-Kho players. But in case of Muscular Endurance Kho-Kho players were better than Chhau Dancers.

Mousumi Mahato received her Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Philosophy Honours from Nistarini College, Sidho Kanho Birsha University, Purulia, West Bengal, India; Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed) from State Institute of Physical Education for Women, University of Calcutta, Kolkata, West Bengal, India; Masters in Physical Education (M.P.Ed) from State Institute of Physical Education for Women, University of Calcutta, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. She qualified West Bengal Board of Primary Education Teacher Eligibility Test, West Bengal State Eligibility Test exam.  She also qualified District Technical Official (DTO) under Athletics Federation of India (AFI). She is a state level Kho-Kho player and district level Kabaddi player.

Dr. Uma Datta, Associate Professor, State Institute of Physical Education for Women, University of Calcutta, Kolkata, West Bengal, India

Dr. Uma Datta (WBES), an Associate Professor of Physical Education, earned her Bachelor’s, Master’s, Master of Philosophy and Ph.D degrees in Physical Education from Laxmibai National College of Physical Education in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. She was a former gymnast in India and won several medals (gold, silver, and bronze) in gymnastics from 1976 to 1983. She also attended the Indian coaching camp for the 1982 Asian Games on several occasions. She was also a former National Judge in Gymnastics. Under her supervision, four scholars received their Ph.D. degrees from Burdwan University, West Bengal, India. She has also served as an expert for Ph.D. thesis evaluation and viva-voce at various universities in India. She was the former Officer-in-Charge and DDO at the Government Physical Education College for Women in Hooghly, West Bengal, India. She has completed one major project in physical education under the University Grants Commission. She is currently working as an Associate Professor at the State Institute of Physical Education for Women in Hastings House, Alipore, Kolkata-27, West Bengal, India.
