Abstract

Shadow education, or private supplementary tutoring, has grown into a global phenomenon, with its prominence in many education systems becoming more apparent over the years. While it provides students with the necessary academic reinforcement to excel in standardized examinations, its implications on holistic character development remain underexplored. This paper aims to investigate how shadow education, with its focus on academic success and competition, presents significant challenges to fostering essential character traits such as resilience, empathy, critical thinking, self esteem, emotional intelligence and social responsibility. Drawing on various studies and theoretical perspectives, this research argues that the dominance of shadow education can prioritize cognitive outcomes over character formation, leading to an imbalanced educational experience. The paper highlights the necessity of rethinking educational structures to ensure that character development is not sidelined by the pressures of academic performance enhancement.
