Abstract

Digital literacy is inevitable in today’s modern era. It refers to the ability to effectively and efficiently use digital technologies, tools and platforms to access, understand, create and communicate information. In today’s world, it goes beyond simply operating a computer or smart phone – it involves responsible online behavior, information verification, cyber safety, digital collaboration and the capacity to adapt to constantly evolving technologies. As societies become more knowledge-driven, digital literacy has emerged as a core life skill, equally important as the basic necessities of education. Digital literacy has transformed how teaching and learning take place. Classrooms are no longer restricted to textbooks, blackboards and physical spaces. Students can now access e-libraries, academic videos, interactive simulations, virtual labs and global learning communities. Teachers too, are empowered to use digital tools for presentations, assessments, personalized learning plans and real-time feedback. This shift encourages creativity, curiosity, independent research and collaborative problem-solving among learners. Digital literacy also promotes inclusion. Students in remote areas can assess lessons through online platforms, educational television and more mobile applications. During COVID-19 pandemic, it proved essential in ensuring continuity of education. However, it also highlighted challenges such as the digital divide, unequal internet access, lack of devices, and limited teacher training. Without addressing these gaps, digital literacy may widen educational inequality rather than reduce it. Digital literacy which is the theme of the present paper has changed the purpose and process of education; it prepares the students for future careers, strengthens critical thinking and empowers individuals to participate confidently in a digital society.
