A Comparative Study of Classical and Modern English Literature

English literature has undergone significant transformations from the Classical period to the Modern age, reflecting changes in social, cultural, philosophical, and literary values. Classical English literature is characterized by its emphasis on order, reason, balance, moral instruction, and adherence to established literary conventions. In contrast, Modern English literature emerged as a response to rapid industrialization, world wars, scientific developments, and changing human consciousness, emphasizing individual experience, psychological depth, experimentation, and innovation in literary forms. This paper presents a comparative study of Classical and Modern English literature by examining their major themes, stylistic features, literary techniques, and representative authors. It explores how Classical writers focused on universality, rationality, and social order, whereas Modern writers highlighted subjectivity, fragmentation, alienation, and the complexities of modern life. The study further analyzes the contributions of prominent literary figures from both periods and evaluates the evolution of literary expression across time. The paper concludes that while Classical and Modern literature differ considerably in their approaches, both have played a vital role in shaping the development of English literary tradition and continue to influence contemporary literary thought and criticism.
