Indian Knowledge System (IKS): It’s Impact on National Education Policy (NEP 2020)

Abstract

The Indian perspective encapsulates the comprehension of Indian culture, science, and ideals. The National Education Policy 2020 emphasizes the incorporation of the Indian knowledge system within the curriculum across all educational tiers. This integration seeks to rejuvenate India’s cultural legacy, promote interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary comprehension, and tackle current issues by combining ancient wisdom with contemporary knowledge. In this sense, the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) denotes the extensive repository of wisdom, traditions, and knowledge frameworks that have been cultivated and maintained throughout millennia. It is a comprehensive approach to our treasured culture. The objectives of (IKS) is based on certain principles: (1) It is multifaceted revolving around preserving, promoting and integrating India’s diverse traditional knowledge into contemporary society. (2) The IKS division's efforts have been seen by some as driven by a mandate to save India's past and to use old wisdom in addressing contemporary issues like climate change. This NEP seeks to instill in pupils traits rooted in moral, human, and constitutional values, including empathy, respect for others, a democratic spirit, and a feeling of service.
