Social and Institutional Factors Determining the Functioning of the Canal Irrigation System – A Study on Sathanur Canal Irrigation in Tiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu

These serve as vital irrigation sources for agriculture while also functioning as reservoirs with significant economic, social, aesthetic, and environmental utility. This article examines the water resource management practices within the Sathanur Canal irrigation area in the Tiruvannamalai district. Irrigation management enhances equity and water-use efficiency in agriculture while also improving the socio-economic status of farmers. This view has been confirmed through interviews conducted with farmers, members of water users' associations, and irrigation department officials. This article successfully utilises farmers' opinions and perspectives to shed light on the level of awareness regarding the irrigation management activities and performance of Water Users Associations.
