Abstract

The global transition to sustainable energy remains a critical priority; however, rural communities often face unique barriers to adopting renewable technologies. Despite the well-documented benefits, the adoption of Solar Energy for Household Lighting Systems (SEHLS) in these communities remains persistently low. This presents a significant concern, as such systems enhance energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and promote the decentralization of energy supply, thereby decreasing reliance on conventional power grids and contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These benefits are particularly relevant for Sogod, Southern Leyte, Philippines, a municipality experiencing rapid economic and construction growth that amplifies the demand for sustainable energy. Nonetheless, household-level adoption of renewable lighting solutions remains limited, even where such technologies are available. This underscores the need to examine the various factors that influence household decisions regarding the acceptance or rejection of solar energy solutions. In response, this study applies the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), extended by introducing Environmental Awareness and Income Level, with Income Level moderating the relationships between Perceived Ease of Use, Perceived Usefulness, and Perceived Cost. Using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) on data from 108 household owners, the findings reveal that Environmental Awareness and Perceived Behavioral Control significantly influence adoption intentions, while Knowledge has a negative effect on perceived ease of use and usefulness. These results underscore the need to promote awareness campaigns, provide skills training, simplify technical information, expand financing options, and encourage community demonstrations-insights applicable to similar rural settings worldwide.
