Impact of emerging neighbourhoods on women’s health: A case study from India

Abstract

Neighbourhoods are socio-spatial residential units in urban areas. Women’s experiences in neighbourhoods are gendered due to differential mobility, caregiving roles, and access to shared spaces. Although global research links neighbourhood conditions and health, evidence from developing countries, particularly among working-age women, remains limited. This study attempts to examine the influence of neighbourhood environments on women’s health in Newtown, an emerging planned neighbourhood in Kolkata, India. A mixed-methods exploratory design was employed. Primary data were collected from 170 working-age women from 15 to 59 years through surveys and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while qualitative data were thematically analysed. High prevalence of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) was observed. Neighbourhood conditions were significantly associated with physical and mental health outcomes. Lack of walkability increased the odds of cardiovascular disease at 1.62, diabetes at 1.51, and orthopaedic problems at 1.78. Air pollution led to respiratory concerns at 1.68, and loud music elevated neurological vulnerabilities at 1.71. Low social cohesion predicted mental health concerns at 1.98. Neighbourhood in Newtown influence women’s health, and gender-sensitive urban planning becomes essential to improve well-being and equitable health access.
