Abstract

The Toto tribe, one of the smallest indigenous communities in India, represents a distinctive ethno-cultural formation in the western Duars region of North Bengal. Concentrated exclusively in Totopara village of Alipurduar district, the community has historically experienced geographical isolation, demographic vulnerability, and socio-economic marginalization. This paper reconstructs the ethno-historical trajectory of the Totos by examining their geographical location, environmental background, origin theories, migration traditions, colonial encounters, administrative recognition, and demographic changes. Drawing upon ethnographic writings, census data, and regional historical interpretations, the study situates the Toto community within the broader political transformations of the Duars under Cooch Behar and Bhutia rule, followed by colonial incorporation. The article argues that the Toto identity evolved through displacement, selective cultural adaptation, and strategic isolation for survival. Despite their recognition as a Scheduled Tribe in 1956 and later categorization as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG), the Totos continue to confront structural challenges. This study contributes to tribal historiography by providing a historically grounded and analytically structured account of this micro-community.
