Assessment of Students’ Mental Health at Higher Secondary Level – A Successful Initiation Towards Sustainable Living

Abstract

National Education Policy 2020 has envisioned to create a supportive educational environment that prioritizes mental health not only for enhancing academic performance but also for contributing to the overall well-being of learners, equipping them with essential life skills for sustainable living. Where, Mental Health of the higher secondary learners is always a critical area of concern due to the physical, psychological and social burdens they face during their transitional phase. The abstract explores the Mental Health condition of the 21st century higher secondary learners enrolled in science and arts stream of both Government and Private higher secondary schools. 315 students were taken as sample through simple random sampling and responded to a Mental Health Scale considering 6 dimensions of an individual like self-concept, Environmental mastery, Emotional maturity, Ability to adjust, Perception of reality and Integrated personality. The study resulted that more than half of the students had just acceptable mental health. Moreover, Science students had significantly better mental health condition than arts students and no such significant mean difference found in case of gender and type of school management. The study emphasizes the need for early intervention, school-based mental health programs, counselling services, and parental involvement. It calls for a comprehensive approach combining educational strategies, social support systems, and mental health awareness to foster resilience and well-being among students, highlighting the need for systemic changes.

Trupti Subhrajyoti, Research Scholar (UGC-JRF), P.G. Department of Education, F.M. University, Balasore, Odisha

Trupti Subhrajyoti is currently pursuing Ph.D. in Education as a Senior Research Fellow at the P.G. Department of Education, Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, Odisha, India. She holds an M.Sc. in Zoology and an M.Ed. She qualified UGC-NET (for JRF & Assistant Professor) in the December–June merged cycle of 2022. Her areas of academic interest include Educational Psychology, Teacher Education, School Education, and Guidance and Counselling. She has published five research articles in reputed national and international journals and has presented more than 15 papers in several state, national and international sponsored Seminars and conferences.

Prof. (Dr.) Amulya Kumar Acharya, Professor of Education, P.G. Department of Education, F.M. University, Balasore, Odisha

Prof. (Dr.) Amulya Kumar Acharya is currently serving as Professor and Head of the P.G. Department of Education at Fakir Mohan University, Vyasa Vihar, Balasore, Odisha, India. He holds M.A. degrees in Education and English Literature, along with B.Ed., UGC-NET (Education), and Ph.D. in Education. With over 25 years of teaching and research experience in Higher Education across various parts of India, Prof. Acharya's areas of academic interest include Educational Psychology, Teacher Education, Guidance and Counselling, and Contemporary Trends and Issues in Education. He has contributed extensively to academic literature, having published more than 37 research articles in reputed national and international journals, seven book chapters, and five authored books. Prof. Acharya has been invited as Resource Person in over 150 national and international seminars, conferences, workshops, webinars, and faculty development programmes. He serves as a member of several professional and academic bodies, including Boards of Studies (BOS), Research Advisory Committees (RAC), and School Research Committees (SRC) across various institutions and universities. He is also on the editorial boards of several esteemed journals. In addition to his academic roles, Prof. Acharya has been actively engaged in university administration, holding various responsibilities and contributing to numerous institutional and inter-university committees.
