Abstract

Global Citizenship Education (GCED) has emerged as a critical framework for preparing students to tackle global challenges and engage as responsible and active global citizens. Integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education into Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) presents a promising pathway to foster the principles and goals of GCED. This conceptual paper draws upon data gathered from secondary sources, such as research articles, literature reviews, academic papers, and both national and international reports related to Global Citizenship Education (GCED) and STEM education. This research article explores the intersection of STEM education and GCED, highlighting the potential benefits, challenges, and strategies for effectively incorporating STEM into HEIs to enhance global citizenship competencies among learners, with the growing need for individuals who possess not only technical skills but also a global perspective and the ability to address complex global challenges. The findings suggest that integrating STEM education into HEIs can contribute to developing critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and cultural competence, which are essential for learners to become active global citizens.
