Abstract

Leadership is a multidimensional concept. The effectiveness of leader is contingent upon situational demands. What makes successful politician may differ from what makes one successful in business or education. Political behaviour is outside one’s specified job requirements. Politics is always concerned with power. To influence and lead, leader must develop and use power.”  Power is the key theme of leadership. “Women power means having control, having a say and being listened to; being able to define and create from a woman’s perspective, being able to influence social choices and decisions affecting the whole society and not just areas of society accepted as women’s place; being organised and respected as equal citizens and human beings with a contribution to make.” In a patriarchal society women are excluded from positions of power both inside the house and outside in the society. Gender discrimination is the manifestation of patriarchal norms. Women are denied opportunities to participate in the decision-making process. Women’s political participation is essential for strengthening democracy and for inclusive development resulting in gender equality and woman empowerment. The paper gives a comprehensive theoretical review of studies on different dimensions of women political leadership and behaviour. Inferences can be drawn from the studies that Gender discrimination is a universal phenomenon and women participation in political institutions and activities is low. The paper provides review of studies which give different opinions regarding gender and leadership styles. It can be noted from these studies that women leaders display the qualities of being soft, kind and gentle; shows compassion, empathy and teamwork. They focus more on issues like family matters, health, education and issues related to women and children.
