Vibes of Sirmaur: An Exploration of Folk Dances of Sirmour District of Himachal Pradesh

Abstract

The present research paper has explored the folk dances of the Sirmour District of Himachal Pradesh. The study aimed to find out the folk dance forms of the Sirmour district. Different folk and tribal dances of the Sirmour district, like Sirmouri Natti, Budha Dance, Thoda Dance, Dhilli Natti, Sinhtoo Dance, Bharaltoo Dance and Dagyali Nach are described. Besides this, the paper has discussed the cultural groups of the district, which played a crucial role in the promotion of folk art forms of Sirmour. This paper has also highlighted the folk artists awarded by the state and the central government for their contribution to the field of folk culture.

Author Biography

Dr. Joginder Singh Habbi, Director, Habbi Maan Singh Kala Kendra, Jalag, Sirmour

Dr. Joginder Singh Habbi is a distinguished folk artist and revivalist from the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, India, whose work spans over three decades. He has devoted his career to identifying, documenting and revitalising endangered dance traditions of the Mahasuvi and Hatti communities. Dr. Joginder Singh Habbi has proudly taken traditional Sirmouri folk dances like Natti, Thoda, Sinhtoo, Bharaltoo and Dagyali to international stages, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh to global audiences. Dr. Habbi also engages in video documentation and conducts seminars and workshops in Habbi Maan Singh Kala Kendra and schools and colleges to raise awareness about the region’s cultural heritage. To date, they have performed in over 5000 stage shows, reflecting their unwavering commitment to promoting and preserving traditional Himachali folk culture. “Joginder Habbi aur Sathi” is the first and only “A-Grade” recognized group from Himachal Pradesh by All India Radio. His achievements led to his inclusion in the World Book of Records, Asia Book of Records and India Book of Records.
