Abstract

The mosquito serves as a vector for numerous deadly diseases. To protect the human population from these diseases, mosquito control is a crucial step. The emergence of resistance to synthetic insecticides has led to an increasing trend in utilizing botanical alternatives for the control of mosquito species. The current investigation aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of mature leaf extract of Gmalina arborea on the larval stages of the filarial vector Culex quinquefasciatus.  All larval instars were subjected to treatment with crude and three distinct solvent extracts of G. arborea leaves.  Log-probit analyses were utilized to determine the LC50 and LC90 values.  Regression and ANOVA analyses were employed to provide statistical justifications. Cent percent larval mortality was observed in the 1st instars larvae at a concentration of 2.5% of the crude extract and 100 ppm of the ethyl acetate solvent extract after 72 hours of exposure.  Non-target organisms were safe on both crude and solvent extracts.  Consequently, G. arborea could serve as a promising larvicidal agent against Cx. quinquefasciatus.
