Relevance of Value-Based Education in the Twenty-First Century

Value-Based Education is necessary in the present-day society. It emerged as an important concern in the twenty-first century due to rapid technological changes, globalisation, cultural diversity, and emerging ethical challenges. It is an approach that focuses on the ethical, moral, emotional and social development of the students. This paper discusses the concept, philosophical and theoretical foundation, contemporary relevance, problems in implementation, and strategies for effective implementation of Value-Based Education in the present-day scenario. Researchers analyse the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the Indian National Education Policy 2020, various philosophical ideologies, various theoretical concepts, and existing research studies through the qualitative content analysis method. It examines the philosophical roots of Value-Based Education through Indian and Western educational thought. The paper claims that education in the twenty-first century needs to go beyond intellectual development to build character, empathy, honesty, integrity, and responsible citizenship. Value-Based Education plays a crucial role in promoting ethical use of technology, supporting constitutional and democratic values, enhancing emotional well-being, and fostering environmental awareness. This article includes a vision for the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises holistic, multidisciplinary, and Values-Based Education for nation-building. This study concludes that Value-Based Education is an important part of education for attaining long-term, peaceful, and inclusive development in the twenty-first century. This work helps its stakeholders, teachers, policy makers and educators to realise the need for and importance of Value-Based Education in today’s society.
