Contribution of Women Scholars in the Emergence and Development of Sociology: An Analytical Study

સમાજશાસ્ત્રના ઉદભવ અને વિકાસમાં મહિલા વિદ્વાનોનું પ્રદાન: એક વિશ્લેષણાત્મક અભ્યાસ

Abstract

Traditionally, the history of sociology has focused primarily on “male founders” such as Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, Émile Durkheim, and Max Weber. However, this research paper aims to highlight the contributions of important women scholars whose ideas played a decisive role in strengthening the foundation of sociology. This paper analyzes the work of Western women sociologists like Harriet Martineau (considered the first woman sociologist), Jane Addams, Marianne Weber, and Beatrice Webb, as well as Indian women sociologists such as Iravati Karve, Leela Dube, Dr. Neera Desai, and Ilaben Bhatt. The study shows that these women not only developed sociological theories but also provided deep perspectives on social surveys, methodology, family institutions, labor division, and gender equality. The primary objective of this study is to restore the “invisible” role of women in the development of sociology as an academic discipline. The findings suggest that women scholars connected theoretical knowledge with social reform and practical policies, making sociology more human-centered and holistic.

Abstract in Gujarati Language: પરંપરાગત રીતે સમાજશાસ્ત્રના ઇતિહાસમાં ઓગસ્ટ કોમ્ત, કાર્લ માર્ક્સ, એમિલ દુર્ખિમ અને મેક્સ વેબર જેવા 'પુરુષ સ્થાપકો' પર વધુ ધ્યાન આપવામાં આવ્યું છે. જોકે, આ સંશોધન પેપર તે મહત્વપૂર્ણ મહિલા વિદ્વાનોના પ્રદાનને ઉજાગર કરવાનો પ્રયાસ કરે છે જેમના વિચારોએ સમાજશાસ્ત્રના પાયાને મજબૂત બનાવવામાં નિર્ણાયક ભૂમિકા ભજવી છે. આ પેપરમાં પશ્ચિમી મહિલા સમાજશાસ્ત્રી હેરીયેટ માર્ટિનો (જેમને પ્રથમ મહિલા સમાજશાસ્ત્રી માનવામાં આવે છે), જેન એડમ્સ, મેરિયન વેબર, અને બીટ્રીસ વેબ અને ભારતીય મહિલા સમાજશાસ્ત્રી ઈરાવતી કર્વે, લીલા દુબે, ડૉ. નીરા દેસાઈ, ઈલાબહેન ભટ્ટ જેવી મહિલાઓના કાર્યોનું વિશ્લેષણ કરવામાં આવ્યું છે. સંશોધન દર્શાવે છે કે આ મહિલાઓએ માત્ર સિદ્ધાંતો જ નથી આપ્યા, પરંતુ સામાજિક સર્વેક્ષણ, પદ્ધતિશાસ્ત્ર, કુટુંબ સંસ્થા, શ્રમ વિભાજન અને સ્ત્રી-પુરુષ સમાનતા જેવા વિષયોમાં ગહન દ્રષ્ટિકોણ પૂરો પાડ્યો છે. અભ્યાસનો મુખ્ય ઉદ્દેશ્ય સમાજશાસ્ત્રના શૈક્ષણિક વિષય તરીકેના ઘડતરમાં 'અદ્રશ્ય' રહેલી મહિલાઓની ભૂમિકાને પુનઃસ્થાપિત કરવાનો છે. તારણો સૂચવે છે કે મહિલા વિદ્વાનોએ સૈદ્ધાંતિક જ્ઞાનને સામાજિક સુધારણા અને વ્યવહારુ નીતિઓ સાથે જોડીને સમાજશાસ્ત્રને વધુ માનવીય અને સર્વગ્રાહી બનાવ્યું છે.
